If I were a piano student, I’d rather have Yuja Wang treat me like this…
More to the point, I am not sure how effective Lang Lang is in showing the young man how to produce a big and beautiful sound. He is also seems to dictate phrasing, instead of enabling him to come up with his own interpretation. We are watching only a few snippets, out of context.
Bang-Bang should never teach a master class. He has nothing of musical importance to pass on to anyone, except how not to play.
If you´d any idea about piano playing, which you obviously don´t,you would in fact recognize that what he says here, about the position of the wrist in order to obtain a fuller, less “bangy”sound.is 100%right.
If he hadn’t messed up his left hand, I would advise Wrong-Wrong to keep his day-job. He’ll never be fa teacher.
I am no Lang Lang fan, but before arguing about his left hand problems and teaching, think of Gary Graffman and Leon Fleisher.
Lang Lang show that wrist must be down not stick up. This way you’ll get better sound and avoid physical problem with hand. Mediocre student and emotional teacher. Good instructions.
Of course it is! Music is very physical. What is not acceptable is for a musician as tasteless as Lang Lang to presume to teach. And he is not very articulate.
A teacher has to teach phrasing. It’s not individual, it’s what’s in the score. Music is not all subjective, and being an artist does not mean doing whatever you feel like.
Lang Bang Lang, please dress like Yuja Wang to become more relevant?
#ManToo
In the land of the blinds, the one-eyed is king!
More problematic maybe is at 2:49 when he makes the face of – what is that intended to be, a retarded person? A physically disabled person?
He’s just showing the student that his elbow is stuck to his body which is causing tension and stopping him from playing the piece. His face is obviously just an expression of how uncomfortable keeping your elbows stuck to your body is.
Now stop getting offended at someone trying to help someone play the piano better.
He touched that man. Call the police!!! #himtoo
The answer is no. You ask first.
It is so simple and fundamental, I don’t even know why it’s an issue.
Why don’t musicians slap each other on the butt after a good play?
Each sphere of practice (sports, music, etc) has its own culture, but that doesn’t make it alright.
I am wondering what the student is thinking. I would leave the building. My problem is that Lang Lang makes a fool out of his pupil. Lang Lang shows no respect and manners what-so-ever. Is he going bananas? Did he lose track of reality?
Those Masterclasses make me doubt of their efficiency-
This is a way for the “master” to make more money and gain more buzz, nothing else.
