Congratulations for Yajie Zhang….!
While in the West, the voices claiming ‘classical music’ as a genre being outdated, elitist, too difficult, ‘no longer representing contemporary concerns’ and being ‘an instrument of the settled bourgeoisie for supressing the masses’, a culture at the other end of the world, rooted in an entirely different view of the human condition, and trapped within a dictatorial, illegal government system, has discovered Western classical music, embracing it and producing young, dedicated performers. All this proves the universality of the genre, but does it invite Western critics’ reconsideration? Not at all, since the critique was never intended as an argument, but is based upon envy and hatred of something that is more than survival concerns.
