It’s a big surprise that German violinist Stefan Tarara did not advance to round 2. Tarara was obviously audience’s favorite in round one.

Tarara is 8th in the, not very representative, poll here:

The poll’s (and, I guess, the female Medici TV pano competition presenter’s) piano favorite (Korobeinikov) did not make it to round 2 either. For me about 25 could have made it to round 2. I had 2 or 3 top candidates, they are all through, after that it would have been very tough.

those are the rulls. The facts that some of the fantastic talents did not make the cut did not diminish their future opportunities at all. The Tchaikovsky com-petition is only one of the many important opportunities.

Thanks for the link to the poll. Although it took me several rounds of google translation to finally get to the right poll page, it’s nice to know such a poll exist. Seeing that Russian lady with 1/3 of the total votes, I wouldn’t call that “representative” either. As a matter of fact, she was on my elimination list, and apparently the jury was with me. (:

The “audience’s favorite” I mentioned was based on live audience’s responses from what I see on medici.tv: Tarara’s performances inarguably had the loudest and longest applaud from the audience. In my opinion, that is a lot more convincing than something like a web poll which can be easily manipulated.
