Struggling to plug the Nelsons gap
mainEdward Gardner was to have given his last concert as principal guest conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchetra, but we hear he’s agreed to extend his commitment for another year to give the orchestra more time to choose a new music director.
Andris Nelsons is proving a hard act to replace. Boston may have to face up to the same problem soon.
Is the blog-keeper suggesting that Nelsons will “soon” leave Boston—for what? Berlin? After what will have been only three years? He is currently in his FIRST SEASON as BSO Music Director? There is a big recording project in the works with DGG. Leaving Boston so soon after arriving would hardly speak well for his character. Wonder what the blog-keeper knows that the rest of us do not.
This is excellent news. Ed Gardner has been an exceptional Principal Guest Conductor who has been responsible for many brilliant performances. Long may his relationship wth the CBSO continue.
So why can’t Nelsons do both Boston & Berlin? No big thing in the conducting field. More Fleet Street journalism.
Boston wouldn’t let him do Birmingham and Boston so suspect they won’t be happy with Berlin – unless they do because its of more prestige than Birmingham.
The Berlin folks have also said that they’re unwilling to share a Music Director, so if they choose Andris Nelsons—and he accepts—he’d almost certainly have to leave his Boston post.
