Percy Sledge, who wrote words and music and sang the iconic hit, has died at 73.

    Percy Sledge was one of the many top artists who started or worked in the small town of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The Stones, Aretha, and many more flocked to record there giving the style of music the unofficial name the “Muscle Shoals Sound”.

    There’s an excellent documentary about the Muscle Shoals phenonomenon which includes the story of Percy Sledge’s remarkable rise to fame. He was literally discovered in a cotton field, where he was singing his heart out as he picked cotton, with that astounding voice. He was whisked into the Muscle Shoals studios where he recorded his 1st hits.

    Lets hope Mr Bortslap is not viewing this as he will have apoplexy about celebrating what he considers to be music that is not “high art”
    But for those of us who grew up in the 60s this music will bring back such warm memories, although I do have to confess that I consider his “warm and tender love” to be superior to “when a man loves a woman”…………ah, good times!
