Moscow commissions a better Shostakovich monument
mainThere is one in St Petersburg, in the middle of an unsightly housing estate.
The city of Moscow has commissioned a new statue, to be installed in the House of Music next May for the 40th anniversary of the composer’s death.
But is it not a wonderful thing that statues and sculptures are placed amongst housing estates in this manner? Why should statues of a nation’s cultural figureheads be exclusive to the well heeled central/commercial areas of a city?
Dimitri was a man of the people and people live in all manner of housing so stop being elitist
Well said SVM – perhaps the new statue should be sited outside the stadium of DS’s favourite football club – he was, after all, a qualified referee…..
