I was trying to watch the Barenboim Beethoven performance – preparing to be moved as we watched the release of the15 km of lit balloons marking the former wall.
Unfortunately the production teams of both German stations I tuned to felt it necessary to offer ‘expert comment’ over most of the performance. Kind of reminded me of the BBC! Don’t remember them doing this during the Bernstein performance 25 years ago!
Frankly you didn’t miss much. It was a musically empty ‘run through’…and that ghastly tenor who replaced Kaufmann sounded like a strangulated choirboy.
I watched on youtube. It is available there with no commentary. A very effective rendering, I thought, with the exception of Vogt, who was simply not appropriate for the piece. Pape and Fleming were both very impressive, Garanca was not quite as effective as I’d hoped.
