Death of a budget-label maestro
mainThe death has been announced of the distinguished Slovenian conductor Anton Nanut, widely known for his 160 recordings from Ljubljana on a range of western budget labels, many of them highly prized by connoisseurs.
Nanut, who was 84, was chief conductor of the Slovenian Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1981 to 1998.
He toured the orchestra across Europe, to Russia and to the United States, where they had a successful debut in Carnegie Hall.

I attended the concert directed by Maestro Nanut in January 2009 at the Croatian National Theatre in Rijeka. The program consisted of Rachmaninoff’s Second Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6. Thank you for wonderful memories Maestro!
He introduced me to great number of pieces when i was still a school kid and knew nothing about classical music.
My respects.
This is truly disheartening. Also sad is that his legacy will be clouded because the numerous budget labels on which his recordings appeared often employed pseudonyms making his work difficult to identify.
that’s amazing that budget records would use a pseudenom…certainly I in Aotearoa New Zealand had never heard of him though his name is in very small print on a budget Beethoven from the very earliest CDs here
