Great Jazz critic. Will be missed!
RIP. He was a terrific critic and also a fine writer of young adult fiction (e.g. “The Day They Came to Arrest the Book” among several others).
A wonderful writer whose columns were carried in newspapers on both sides of the political spectrum. RIP.
He was a giant.
Nat Hentoff was one of the best, most fair-minded critics in an era of great contention concerning “America’s Music”. He was also one a small group of wonderful, independent-minded American journalists who were always able to rise above ideology. These would include Jack Newfield and Murray Kempton and, at least in older age when his Stalinist blinkers had finally come off, I.F. Stone.
