Nightmare at Santa Fe as two opera stars pull out
mainThe tenor Warren Mok has withdrawn from the US premiere of Huang Ruo’s opera Dr. Sun Yat-sen, citing other commitments. The show is due to open in a fortnight.
The soprano Laura Tatulescu has dropped out of Don Pasquale ‘due to severe allergies’.
To lose one star is a misfortune. To lose two…
More here.
To lose two. . . is part of the perils of singing at altitude (6800 ft) during the summer. . . The company is gifted with an excellent apprentice program, strong covers, and a music staff second to none, to say nothing of the orchestra, one of the best in the country.
They will soldier on, and shine.
If Santa Fe can’t find a better Norina than Laura Tatulescu, in a competitive Fach with many excellent American singers, it really needs new casting management.
Ms. Tatulescu is American (of Romanian parentage) and has a huge career going. Keep up.

Didn’t realize she was American. Still don’t like her, either the voice or her musicianship.
… going on her Marzelline, Zerlina, Adina and Musetta!
There has to be something fishy here. Warren Mok has withdrawn at two weeks notice – because of other commitments? Other commitments?? How is it possible in this day and age that any artist withdraws from a leading role because of a clash of commitments? That’s one of the weakest excuses I have ever heard. Does he have neither an agent, a diary or a smartphone? There is clearly more here than either he or Sante Fe is letting on.
+1
Were these allergies the eason why Tatulescu was “indisposed” for Don Pasquale’s opening night? I wonder if she will be back next year for La Finta Giardiniera, or if she will be bowing out (or asked to not return).
