Zubin’s Valencia farewell? Recording Turandot with Andrea Bocelli
mainHours after he announced that he was quitting Valencia because government cuts had provincialised it, Zubin Mehta let it be known that his parting gift would be a Turandot recording with the pop tenor, Andrea Bocelli.

Some “parting gift”. More like a kick in the pants.
Let’s hope it is better than his unimaginative Decca set from 1972, grossly overrated by the much-too-influential British critics, and oversold, despite the good work of Caballé and Pavarotti.
Turandot needs a strong, strong conductor … like Karajan!
Recording a great opera with a non classical singer in a leading role? I don’t get it.
What’s there not to get. Bocelli sells better than a “pure” classical singer.
Strange some nonsensical people keep saying Bocelli is not ‘classical’. Just because he’s exposed to pop does not mean that it devalues him in any way. On the contrary, he is perhaps a better musician than Pavarotti, whose voice is so creepy small and feminine at times.
Determine ‘classical’ for peace’s sake!
How many customers for this wretched recording would play it from start to finish more than once anyway?
