Maestro move: An American conquers the Basques
mainRobert Trevino, 32, has been named principal conductor of the Euskadi Symphony Orchestra in San Sebastian, capital of the Basque region of Spain.
He succeeds Jun Märkl next September.
Trevino, from Fort Worth, has only conducted the Basque orchestra twice.
Best post-concert dining ON EARTH. Who wouldn’t want to work in San Seb?
A truly magnificent conductor, bravo!
A genius. I heard his Mahler in Munich a while back and it was truly superb!!! Congratulations to the Basque musicians in snaring this phenomenal Maestro!! Bravi!!!
Congratulations! Maestro Trevino had a stellar week of performances with The Detroit Symphony! Bravo!
Wonderful news and well-deserved
San Sebastian is not the capital of the Basque Country! The capital is Vitoria-Gasteiz.
Can’t wait for him to come to Berlin!
Amazing! Congratulations to the orchestra and the maestro!
He is a superb musician and powerful conductor. His performances are memorable and clarification and deep insight to the composition. I look forward to hearing him soon!
Maestro Trevino is certainly the right conductor for the job! His passion always makes for beautiful music. Congratulations to maestro and orchestra both!
He is an insightful and compelling conductor. He has the incredible talent to convey the composition with clarity and compelling conviction. I look forward to hearing him again soon.
Interesting. Trevino is the 3rd US conductor to chosen recently to head a major Spanish orchestra. He joins fellow Texan John Axelrod, Music Director of Sevilla and Erik Nielsen
of Iowa, new Music Director of Bilbao.
Both Axelrod and Nielsen are getting rave reviews both from their orchs. and their respective publics. This new acceptance of US conductors bucks a backlash of at least a decade in accepting US conductors into Spanish orchestras. They just haven´t been too welcome.
Watching carefully for possible new appointments: Filarmonica de Gran Canarias is on a conductor search as is RTVE in Madrid. Don´t believe there are any US candidates in the running for either job, but who knows what might happen!
