mainThe composer Malcolm Forsyth has died in Edmonton, aged 74. A South African, he emigrated in 1968 and enjoyed considerable success in Canada. His daughter, Amanda, principal cellist in the National Arts Centre Orchestra, is married to its conductor, Pinchas Zukerman.

The light tenor Gerhard Unger has died in Stuttgart, aged 94. A Bayreuth stalwart in Die Meistersinger, he appeared at La Scala, Salzburg and the Met.
