Having gotten my BA via the music department at Harvard, I would concur with that school’s appearance on your cynical list. While Harvard is a great school for musicians (e.g. Leonard Bernstein and my classmate Yo-Yo Ma), it is not a conservatory: you cannot study an instrument for credit. The Harvard music department is, however, a renowned place for the academic study of music, such as historical musicology (my area), theory and analysis as well as composition.
