It’s official: La Scala has new music director
mainWhen we first reported that Riccardo Chailly was to be music director of La Scala, the maestro’s people texted us to say: not yet.
Well, La Scala has just announced it. We’ve texted him congratulations.
UPDATE: The terms are that he will be known as Direttore Principale in 2015-16 and Direttore Musicale from 2017 to 2022. Don’t bother your heads wondering why. It’s an internal Italian issue.

Lucky La Scala. I hope they appreciate him.
I hope he continues at Leipzig where his work with the Gewandhaus has produced some of his best work and has raised that orchestra to peak performance quality. No word yet at the Gewandhaus site.

Does he know what he is doing.Sounds like a poisoned chalice.
Riccardo Chailly is brilliant and I think he’ll benefit from an awful lot of goodwill for quite a while. I hope it’ll be enough to help him through the inevitable BS he’ll have to face.
