    God help us, David.

  • Petros Linardos says:

The list says something about wikipedia searches. The choice of photographs says something about Slipped Disc.

  • Alexander says:

Another close-up of a breast. Could some effort not be put into cropping the thumbnail images to focus on an artist’s face? I recognise Khatia Buniatishvili by her face, not her breasts. Alternatively, her hands would have been a more appropriate selection.

  • Bob Kosovsky says:

This list is the top 10 pianists *searched* on Wikipedia. To call it “the top living pianists” is a reckless misinterpretation of information.

    • norman lebrecht says:

No it isn’t, Bob. According to Wikipedia these are the most frequented – hence ‘top’ – pianists. Try to be less pedantic.

      • Erik Abbink says:

“Most searched for” would be far more accurate. Your headkine can easily mislead readers, hence the flack.

        • norman lebrecht says:

Headline writers are permitted a certain licence.

          • Richard S says:

Tosh! This isn’t ‘licence’, it’s a deliberate confusion of meanings of ‘top’ (qualitative and quantitative) for sake of an easy headline, lazy journalism and an elitist sneer at the vacuously tasteless masses. Misleading and nasty.

      • Andrew Barnard says:

        Norman,

A critic relying on search stats to rank top pianists? Seriously?

  • KP says:

I hope there is a list of oboists too.

  • David Conway says:

Accotding to the person who sent ou the list you cite, these people were the most searched on Wikipedia. That is not the same as saying that Wikipedia in any way claims that these are the ‘top living pianists.’ Accuracy, especailly as egards attributions, is not pedantry – shame on you, Norman!

  • Layton James says:

These may be the most ‘searched’ pianists today, but they’re not my favorites, or even those I consider to have had a lasting and postive influence on contemporary music. How about Leonard Bernstein, Manny Ax, or Oscar Peterson?

  • Cyril Blair says:

If you combined Helfgott’s bathrobe with Buniatishvili’s hankerchief-and-skirt, you could make some really hideous ties that Trump would probably sell.

  • Malcolm Jay Kottler says:

Want to see how many Wikipedia searches took place for a particular person or subject in the last 10 or 20 or 30 or 60 or 90 days (you choose the time period)?

    Then go here:
    https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews/?project=en.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&range=latest-20&pages=Cat|Dog

“x” out “cat” and “dog” (they are the default examples given by Wikipedia), and fill in the name of interest to you.

For example, for the last 20 days, if you put in Florence Foster Jenkins, you will not be surprised to see a peak on the day the Meryl Streep movie debuted in the US and on the following 2 days (about 60,000 daily).

Put in Norman Lebrecht, and you will see that Norman peaked at about 35 on 3 different days in the last 20 days.
