G&S star dies, aged 80
mainThe death has come to our attention of Geoffrey Shovelton, lead tenor with the D’Oyly Carte company.
Geoffrey died a month ago, in US retirement.
A principal tenor with Scottish Opera and Basilica Opera, until he signed for the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1975, singing Gilbert and Sullivan until the company broke up in 1982.
It was another age…
Indeed it was. Sorry to hear this; he was a fine artist. I gather, though, that his great predecessor Thomas Round is still around at 100.
A very decent singer well suited to the G&S canon. And yes, the great Thomas Round celebrated his 100th birthday last October. He is far more deserving of an Honour than the political riff-raff supposedly included on Cameron’s resignation list.
I agree with Richard Gibb entirely regarding the subject of Honours Lists. Geoffrey will be always honoured for his talent and his friendship by many.
Thomas Round auditioned him for his first stint with the D’Oyly Carte!
