Live Pavarotti is found in Wales
mainA recording has turned up of the 19 year-old tenor singing at the Llangollen Eistedfodd in 1955 as part of the Chorus Rossini from Modena. Needless to say, his chorus won.
Apparently, the recording was issued on CD by the Welsh Development Agency in 1991 but they forgot to send it out. It turned up the other day in a tray of junk.
Story here.
The big man returned to Llangollen 40 years later with his father as joint presidents of the Eistedfodd.
The word is eisteddfod, Norman.
I remember reading a comment from him about this, that he had been studying English in the train ride to Wales and arrived there … only to learn that it was all for nothing because he was staying with a family that spoke Welsh at home! It’s a magnificent language, but a far cry from English!
I wish you’d stop scaring me with your headlines.
Carlos Kleiber once said of the remarkable Pavarotti (as he had conducted him in “Boheme”) ..”when Pavarotti sings the sun shines on the earth”. Very true.
