We have been notified of the passing on Monday of the Grammy award-winning conductor John Nelson, an American who became an authority in the music of Hector Berlioz and other romantic creators. John was 83.

The son of Protestant missionaries in Costa Rica, John Nelson made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1972 with the complete Les Troyens. He went on to become music director of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (1976-87), the Opera Theatre of St. Louis (1985-91) and the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris (1998-2008).
