‘Am I a criminal?’ demands the Greek-Russian conductor Teodor Currentzis in an interview with Der Spiegel. The challenging performer, 53, has been shunned by many western organisations for receiving financial support from the Kremlin and saying nothing about Ukraine.

Currentzis complains: ‘How can it be that there is no longer freedom of speech in Europe? Even worse: There is no longer even the freedom to remain silent!’

He adds: ‘Maybe I’m not on the right side of history! I don’t know where that’s supposed to be. My navigator can’t find it.’

He conducted Brahms and Mahler in Munich on Sunday.
