Ruth Leon recommends.. BBC Television Centre – Roy Castle
Ruth Leon recommendsMany years ago I used to work at that peculiar custom-built round building which was the BBC Television Centre.
It was a stange and inconvenient place to work. The studios were far from the offices, the technical departments were miles from anywhere, it was always too hot or too cold, and finding anyone who had wandered off was impossible, so programme-making was a bit hit and miss. The odd architectural configuration made for a lot of walking and running round in circles to get anywhere, but we loved it. Many, many innovative programmes were made here. And this is where our dreams were made. Now I believe it has been converted to apartments.
Here’s a flashback to 1977 and one of the most memorable events ever to take place in the old BBC Television Centre. The late and much lamented Roy Castle sings and tap dances in the studio and then outside in the courtyard with 500 others to break the record for largest tap dance ever, in his series All Star Record Breakers 1977.
I wonder how many of those tap dancing record breakers are still dancing today?
