When Debussy was up against Stravinsky

Daily Comfort Zone

The Frenchman composed Jeux for the Ballets Russes in 1911-12, after getting excited by Stravinsky’s Petrushka. He decided to go one better but went too far for public tolerance. Jeux never really caught on, partly because it is so hard to play with accuracy and fidelity to the composer’s intentions.

Rare as it is in the concert hall, the Venezuelan conductor Domingo Hindoyan gives an exemplary performance of Jeux with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Truly remarkable.
