It will need more than a European peacekeeping force to resolve the futures of artists who have been banned from the world stage over their support for Vladimir Putin’s war of aggression.

They fall into two groups. Category A includes those who offered enthusiastic support for the military action. They include conductors Valery Gergiev and Yuri Bashmet, singers Ildar Abdrazakov and Hibla Gerzmava and a host of fly-in concert soloists. Category B involves former and passive collaborators of whom the best known are the soprano Anna Netrebko and the conductor Teodor Currentzis.

The B-listers will be instantly rehabilitated. The others may take a few months to get invited. There are no moral judgements involved in this business. Just practicalities.
