Too much information? A soprano overshares
OperaThe Russian-born soprano Olga Peretyatko has a habit of spilling personal beans on Facebook. In June 2018, she announced that she was filing for divorce from the con ductor Michele Mariotti and withdrawing from all of his performances.
In August 2020 she married the Russia bass Grigory Shkarupa and in 2021 gave birth to a daughter. Her Facebook status is currently listed as ‘separated’.
Peretyatko has just withdrawn from La traviata in Genoa. She offers a very full explanation:
Hello, my friends!
I’ve been quiet for a while, but I successfully underwent surgery to remove a polyp the size of a small apricot from my maxillary sinus. It turns out that it’s been with me for 20 years, and only now do I truly know what it means to breathe freely!
Unfortunately, I had to sacrifice performing *La Traviata* in Genoa, but this operation had to be done in winter to avoid the addition of allergic factors in spring or summer, and I am currently not allowed to fly. Thank you to those who sent personal messages concerned about why my name disappeared from the lineup. I’m really sorry that those of you who bought tickets and wanted to see me won’t have the chance this time. But I’m inviting everyone to *Rigoletto* in Florence!
Thank you to Opera Carlo Felice Genova for your understanding, and break a leg to my colleague Carolina Lopez Moreno who jumped in into this production!
UPDATE: Olga today changed her Fb status to ‘married’
She really didn’t over share anything…but if you have to add salacious gossip on top of it then, it’s on you obviously. Let’s wish her some good healing and drop the other nonsense.
She did not over-share, but neither did Norman engage in “salacious gossip”.
As us singers how we are, and we will regale you for half an hour about our creeping crud, reflux, vocal fold edema, menstrual distress, &c. It’s just how we roll.
If we DON’T tell you, you’ll think we cancelled because we didn’t like our costume, we showed up unprepared and got fired, we no longer have high notes, etc.
Agree! Nothing she said was ‘oversharing’! I think these writers give you a headline to catch your interest, and then the content is not what you expected based on the headline.
Came here to say exactly this. I wish get a speedy recovery!
Like her transparency and her statements were reasonable. She did not overshare. Praying for her recovery.
I’m always interested to hear about these performers personal trouble, because it makes them human and when you’ve to listen to them you have something serious to think about. Also I get more aware of my own sinus and that is a great help during work when I’m sometimes breathing with difficulty because of the stress.
Sally
It seems that expressing the size of abnormal growths in one’s body by referencing different fruits is not just an American thing! I’m glad it was a “small” apricot, and I wish her a speedy recovery.
Who cares? It’s social media in the year 2025 and she can share whatever she wants. Jeezus.
Over sharing would’ve been posting pics or videos of the procedure. Let’s be thankful she didn’t go that far.
Don’t really care about this russian diva, and have no interest in hearing about her or other russian so-called stars. Can we please talk about something or someone more meaningful?
Then don’t read it! She is important to some people.
How is this oversharing? As well as the other times when she mentioned her marriage and her divorce. If this is oversharing, then all your articles about performers and recording reviews are oversharing.
Another similar incident is the death of Patricia Janakova at the age of 25 due to breast cancer. She shared with her fans and participated in interviews about her cancer.
Her beauty and angelic voice will be missed.
Norman, that seems harsh. Not oversharing — singers will find this relevant, interesting, and potentially helpful. Disclaimer: not a singer myself.
