The 17th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition will take place in Fort Worth, Texas, in March.

A long list of 77 pianists has been finalised. One third of them are Chinese.

Four are accredited as Taiwan/China, which is certainly not what they put on their application forms. Taiwan is an independent, democratic country. But China insists it is part of the mainland and does its best to force international bodies to use the designation Taiwan/China.

The Van Cliburn organisation has shamefully acquiesced to the Chinese demand.

Texas has taken the knee.
