Berlin’s Komische Oper has called off its summer production of the popular ex-DDR musical, ‘Mein Freund Bunbury’.

They say: ‘We would like to start the year with some good news, but due to the austerity constraints in Berlin, it is with a heavy heart that we have to cancel the planned production “Mein Freund Bunbury”. We are very sorry for this, especially for those involved in the production and, of course, also for all of you who have already bought tickets, which will be reimbusrsed.

  • Andrew J Clarke says:

Why did the DDR approve of a musical about a character in “The Importance of Being Ernest” who never actually appears?
I can’t imagine Walter Ulbricht went bunburying. Or Erich Mielke for that matter. I can imagine Margot Honecker as Lady Bracknell in a blue rinse.

  • Angela Cockburn says:

If that’s an adaptation of “The Importance of Being Earnest” it surely only has eight principals (if you double the butlers) and two sets? Are they canning it because it needs orchestra rehearsals?

  • RW2013 says:

A real pity – last summer they performed
Messeschlager Gisela by the same composer. Anyone who saw it would have been looking forward to Bunbury.
Thanks Joe! (who probably didn’t even see it).
