The mezzo-soprano Regina Sarfaty, who has died at 90, never got picked to sing at the Met.

She was picked by Santa Fe in 1957 while still a student from Brooklyn at Juilliard and she went on to appear at NY City Opera, but the phone never rang from the haughty Met.

In 1960, however, Regina won accolades as Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier at Glyndebourne. The triumph put her formly on the European circuit and she joined the Zurich Opera ensemble for tow decades. Once retired, she settled in Santa Fe.

  • Richard Griffiths says:

According to the Glyndebourne Archive https://www.glyndebourne.com/persons/regina-sarfaty/)Ms Sarfaty was not booked at Glyndebourne every year until 1984. After her first appearances at Glyndebourne in 1960 she did not appear there again until 1984 when she sang Adalaide in the new production of Arabella.

    • Peter San Diego says:

NL does not imply that she sang regularly at Glyndebourne, but that she became a regular on the European circuit.

    • Maria says:

Read the text – ha, ha! Does not say she sang at Glyndebourne every year but she entered the European circuit – a very big circuit as well.

  • Joel Kemelhor says:

Regina Sarfaty sings the role of Baba the Turk in Stravinsky’s 1964 recording of THE RAKE’S PROGRESS [Columbia/Sony]. She may also be heard in songs of Ned Rorem, accompanied by the composer.
