Photos and videos of the piannist Maria Joao Pires show a small tattoo, a leaf perhaps, on the upper side of her right wrist.

She has not apparently made reference to it. Does any of our readers know what it signifies?

Knowing this is really a matter of life and death…

  • ethant says:

OMG, her ears are pierced. Clearly Satan is at work.

  • Unvaccinated says:

it’s a look at me, attention thing.

  • microview says:

Even David Dimbleby had a small shoulder tattoo done…

  • Peter X says:

It is not of our business. It is not important.

  • Anmarie says:

She gets one each time she triumphs after rehearsing for the “wrong” Mozart concerto.

  • Simon says:

I have a tattoo, but no one is interested in it…. so much for the inclusion agenda, eh?

And no, I am not sharing pics, lest someone gets triggered or it becomes a ‘bad news’ item a la FXR.

  • Rustier spoon says:

    Maybe it’s not even permanent…

  • TITUREL says:

Can’t see the tattoo, but I do see lots of Yamahas. Is she a, shudder, “Yamaha artist”?

  • ParallelFifths says:

People do get tattoos, Slipped Disc, even in the classical world. Sometimes a person gets a tattoo to mark a special milestone. Hmmmmm . . . Let’s see . . . . Well, this radiant and ever-young lady celebrated her 80th birthday this year. It appears to be a dolphin, porpoise, or other denizen of the sea. The photo at the link gives a better look.

  • Officer Krupke says:

Looks like Yuja isn’t the only woman singled out by editorial for their appearance

  • John Weagle says:

I seem to recall it is a small dolphin. johnw

    • David K. Nelson says:

According to the always reliable internet, dolphin tattoos signify playfulness, harmony, gentleness, intelligence, friendship, community, resurrection, generosity, gracefulness, freedom, power, serenity and peace.

I’d say that list describes this artist to a “T.”

  • J says:

    It’s a dolphin

  • Been There... says:

As anyone who has dealt with her knows, “eccentric” doesn’t even begin to describe this woman…

  • Anthony Sayer says:

Never understood the attraction of tramp stamps.

  • Dot Beech says:

Tacky. Tattoos are tacky. Always. All of them. What would Jackie Kennedy say???

    • Jeff K says:

I highly doubt that Ms. Pires gives a rap about what the late Jackie Kennedy would have said. She (Pires) is entitled to put whatever pleases her on her own skin.

  • John Borstlap says:

I know what it means, but descretion forbids me to even begin to suggest it, because the meaning is only shared by her intimati.

  • Herbie G says:

I am less concerned about this than this site’s being festooned with so many pop-up and pop-down adverts that it’s now almost impossible to read the text. I understand that some adverts might be necessary to raise money but these are an unmitigated nuisance,

  • PRKFV says:

It’s an ancient symbol for minding your own business

  • Dardanus says:

It’s a dolphin… a long time ago she explained to me when she had it done but I’ve forgotten… ;_(
