The Finnish phenom Tarmo Peltokoski is in Israel this week, conducting the Philharmonic in works they’d never have put together otherwise.

That would be Rautavaara’s Cantus Arcticus, the Vasks violin concerto and, after the interval, Beethoven’s 7th symphony.

He’s also having trouble with mosquitos.

Watch.

It looks like he’s an instant hit.

Please name the soloist when you are writing about a concerto performance. Thank you.

  • NbM says:

Quite a promising musician, and he’s growing into his English-language charm rather quickly. Would have loved to have seen him this year in Jerusalem. The sweet promo video did convince me to grab a ticket to another one of his performances later in the year.

Cantus Arcticus is a pleasant novelty guaranteed to drive your cat crazy but ‘”What’s hip today, might become passé”.

  • VolK says:

The obvious chemistry the young great conductor and the orchestra.

  • Eyal Braun says:

A great concert (I saw it yesterday in Haifa). The vasks is a lovely work, music that takes inspiration from Arvo Part but individual and interesting.
The Beethoven 7th was a great performanes, the two first movement in relatively moderate tempos: The finale was very exciting.

And next weekend- Kirill Petrenko in coming to conduct the Israel PO – five performances of Mahler 9th.

  • Alexander Hall says:

More of the same please. With alternative insects too.
