The death has been made known of the international dancer and choreographer Dada Masilo, one of the most original dance talents to emerge from southern Africa. The national broadcaster SABC says she passed away ‘after a brief illness.’

In her all-too-brief career, Masilo worked with William Kentridge, Ann Masina, Albert Silindokuhle Ibokwe Khoza, David April, PJ Sabbagha and Gregory Maqoma. She was inclined to find African motifs in such classics as ‘The Rite of Spring’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet’

Shocked and saddened by this news.

I saw her Sacrifice two years ago, brought to the UK on tour via Dance Consortium, and it was totally compelling.

Such a vibrant and fearless dancer, and an inspired and inspiring choreographer. Her take on GISELLE and on RITE OF SPRING were fascinating to experience here in New York City.
