Musicians union Local 802 has chosen Broadway trombonist Robert Suttmann as its unopposed new president.

He succeeds harpist Sara Cutler who, in 18 months, nailed major news deals at the New York Philharmonic and New York City Ballet and cleared the Philharmonic to fire two musicians over alleged sexual coercion.

Suttmann will soon face tough talks at the Metropolitan Opera.

Norman, in NYC the officials of Local 802 do not usually get directly involved with the Philharmonic or Met Opera negotiations. Each orchestra has its own bargaining committee and they most often hire their own lawyer to help negotiate. Union officials may provide some advice, etc. but it incorrect to say that Ms. Cutler “nailed” any contract negotiations. I mean no disrespect to her.

    I have been a card-carrying member of Local 802 since 1971.

Has to be better than the leadership in 10-208.

The last election was purposely held with no discussion of the issues of declining membership, the impact of streaming, and poor use of social media.

And without the Biden Bailout for the pension plan, the AFM would be on the ropes.
