India mourns ‘greatest player’
RIPThe legendary tabla player, composer, actor and producer Zakir Hussain died today in a US hospital at the age of 73. A government minister declared him ‘irreplaceable’.
Zakir Hussain shot to fame in the 1970s, collaborating with George Harrison and other western adventurers. His tabla skills were unchallenged, his rhythms personal and inimitable.
Sad news. He played in Birmingham’s Symphony Hall this time last year. An astonishing musician.
Noooo!
An astounding artist. His performances implacably drew in even those who started the evening without the first idea of Indian music.
Very sad news indeed. He played at Aspen this summer, full of energy and musical genius.
