The Finnish music world is in mourning for an outstanding violinist, Eriikka Maalismaa, who succumbed yesterday in hospital to a fast-progressing condition. Eriikka, concertmaster of the Helsinki Philharmonic fro 2006 to 2016, gave the world premiere of Veli Kujala’s Auseil violin concerto. She was later involved with the Avanti! chamber ensemble and freelanced with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

She became director of a new-music festival in her hometown Oulu and was an impassioned advocate for increased music funding and improved social justice.

One of those stories you don’t want to know… just awful.

Condoleances for her family and friends.

Life is fragile, as art is, as music is.

All the more tragic that so many people in the world just don’t give a damn about this fragility.
