A reader informs us that Windows in Newcastle, an outstanding record shop with a colossal stock of classical CDs, has closed after 115 years as a purveyor of good music.

Shops like Windows will never be replaced.

Desperately sad news… many of us relied on JG Windows (and its iconic carrier bags, now collectors’ items) for resources, support, encouragement in our interests, which for many of us turned into careers. There is a GoFundMe page https://gofund.me/844fa97d should you consider there’s any hope of saving this important North Eastern cultural landmark.

Though interests and study didn’t turn into a career, after Uni, no 120-mile-round trip to Ncl was complete without a visit to JGW for LPs, CDs, Sheet Music, Scores, tech and instruments. Like former Tower Records in London, staff very knowledgeable. We won’t see its like again in the NE.

Such a shame but a sign of the times. Used to visit JG Windows during the 70s and 80s and always emerged with lots of LPs and boxsets. A source of musical education so to speak. The digital age triggered it’s decline and it’s surprising it lasted for this length of time.

the cost of keeping a shop
is very high . that is the issue. it is cheaper to post
    CDS from home.

A favourite venue in a great location. Always a must when I visited Newcastle. A sad day

Always sad to hear this. Same thing in the US. I used to go in and look through all the cd’s, and come home with titles I had never heard of, like Padmavati, and I bought the two versions available. Too bad none of the billionaires around don’t purchase these, the way they purchase other companies.

The amazing thing is that it kept going so long.
