Christmas week at Paris Opéra – and the strike is spreading
OperaFirst it was the dancers. Now the stage crews and front-of-house staff have joined in.
Thursday’s Rigoletto was cancelled last-minute at the Bastille, along with the ballet Jeux at the Garnier.
The unions warn of further sudden stoppages.
I just wait for the total collapse of France and sadly that is probably the only hope that country has of reinventing itself. One economist recently said on a radio interview that he predicts that in less than ten years France will be among the poorest countries in Europe, with most of its educated population having left the country to find a better life elsewhere. Then they won’t need any operas, as few who remain will be interested.
All of it self-inflicted.
And another French Prime Minister brought down over the country’s budget restrictions and lack of money. See if the new one survives. The Paris Opera needs to be careful as strikes may well bring redundancies and fewer jobs.
France needs to revisit the 40 hour work week.
