Brazil mourns noted composer, 85
RIPFriends are sharing reports of the death yesterday of Marlos Nobre, internationally known composer and conductor who crossed between classical and Amazonian styles with felicitous ease and beauty.
He was 85.
Surprising that he isn’t played more on ‘relaxing’ radio stations.
Bachianas Brazilieras No. 5 anyone?
To me it sounds more like Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise” meets Villa-Lobos, but the harmonies are very ‘Brazilian’ (chord extensions: 7ths, 9ths, 13ths, etc.).

It is with great sorrow that I receive the news of the passing of the great composer Marlos Nobre. I have known Marlos since childhood, as we are both from the same city, Recife. From an early age, I saw him as a giant in music, whose sensitivity and creativity shaped the Brazilian musical landscape.
A memorable moment I cherish is from 2004, during a concert in Rio de Janeiro. We were performing the Brandenburg Concertos by J.S. Bach, under the baton of Maestro João Carlos Martins. I had the honor of being the soloist in Brandenburgs 4 and 5. It was in that magical context that Marlos approached me and shared an idea that would change my life: a concerto for flute. Thus, the “Concerto Armorial” was born, a work that would become one of my greatest passions.
The premiere took place a few years later, and to my joy, I had the opportunity to perform under Marlos’s direction. Words cannot describe the depth of the moment when we make music with a great musician. The dedication, the connection, the mutual understanding—it’s as if time stands still, and we are in a dimension where music becomes the language of the heart.
Marlos was not just a composer; he was a mentor, a friend, and an endless source of inspiration. His passion for music and his dedication to the craft will continue to resonate in the notes he left for the world. I will miss him deeply, but his work will live on forever in our hearts and in the scores that will be played for generations.
Rest in peace, dear Marlos.

Very sorry to hear this news. Like the late Pavel Karmanov, he had been a great YouTuber from its early days, uploading performances of his works there for many years.
“Surprising that he isn’t played more on ‘relaxing’ radio stations.”
the works by Marlos Nobre I know are all …very dynamic, with the use of lots of percussion and brass.

Brazilians actually use the 7ths, 9ths, and other chord extensions in their harmonies – imagine that!
