In a rare toe-dip into contemporary music, the Vienna Philharmonic will tonight play Bruno Hartl’s Ballad for Large Orchestra, ahead of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique.

Hartl was a timpanist in the orchestra. He retired early in 2015 and died a year ago, aged 60.

The concert is conducted by the Frenchman Altinoglu.

What does Alex Orfaly (the timpanist pictured) have to do with this?

“The concert is conducted by the Frenchman Altinoglu.”

Has Alain Altinoglu gone all pop culture and dropped his first name?

I think it’s quite entertaining music.

Apart from information about the concert there is nothing about Bruno Hartl on their website which is sparse anyway!! Their old website was much more informative than this one.
