The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s President and CEO Jonathan Martin will retire in February after seven years at the helm.

He arrived in Cinc’y from a long stint at the Dallas Symphony. In April this year he organised the transition to a new music director, Cristian Macelaru.

COO Robert McGrath will act as CEO while a successor is sought.

  • SlippedChat says:

The orchestra has put out an extraordinarily detailed (in my opinion, actually verbose and in need of some judicious editorial condensation) press release on the subject.

  • David Hyslop says:

Jonathan is a talent and has had a long and fine career.

Jonathan followed me , as CEO of the Dallas Symphony, after my year and a half as their interim CEO during a turnaround period for the Dallas Symphony.

May he do well in retirement.

  • Ivan Zugelj says:

Jonathan was a poor manager when he managed the Charlotte Symphony. It was his previous job before accepting the role in Dallas. He made huge promises to the musicians under the guise of existential threats, and was able to show a huge profit to the board. All on the backs of the musicians. Seems as though he might have learned a lot since those days. [redacted: defamation]
