The Dover Quartet, based at Curtis, just saw violist Julianne Lee walk out after less than a year, reverting to her old orchestra job.

Now violinist Joel Link, ‘cannot perform due to unforeseen circumstances’.

He’s replaced on the current tour by Jonathan Ong, first violinist of the Verona Quartet.

  • Gerry Feinsteen says:

Soon his bio will read he’d Been Dover quartet violinist for many years.

Heard them in Chicago some years ago. The original viola player was simply very good. The overall impression I had was that they idolized the Guarneri, ended up playing a bit like ‘live’ Emerson. Very little influence from the old Juilliard Quartet or the masterful Hollywood String Quartet.

    • Anon says:

Individual perceptions matter here. The ‘live’ Emerson cranked out the decibels and was far from perfect, but always emotional and occasionally inspiring. The ‘recorded’ Emerson was perfect and careful sounding.
My impressions of the Dover matches neither of these descriptions. I can’t say they really sounded like the ‘lite’ version of any other group. I only heard them a few times with the original violist. The cellist was an exquisite player, but didn’t ground the group, and in many ways this was the most unique quality of the group. Both the 2nd violinist and original violist were excellent, and among the finest quartet players I’ve ever heard. The 1st violinist was a beautiful musician, though not as individual as the greatest in that position.

    • 4tet says:

      Odd “impression.” Rather pretentious, eh?

  • Robert says:

The previous blurb said Lee would “continue to tour with the Dover Quartet through June 2025”.

    So what happened?

    • V.Lind says:

A lot of unforeseen circumstances flying around that lot.

Is that picture of the white cliffs of Dover? If this group is based at Curtis, what has it to do with the quartet? They are closer to the capital of Delaware.

Joel is still playing. Jonathan fills in for only two concerts in a couple of weeks

  • Elliott says:

He is unable to perform because he is doing a trial week in Cleveland Orchestra for their concertmaster position. However, Franz WM cancelled due to health reasons so he may have to come back. I don’t know how Mr. Link will be a leader of a major orchestra when there was so much drama in a 4-member group.

  • Jo says:

He is very funny in coachings. He talks about how bad other quartet violinists sound in the professional world. I think it is funny.

  • freddynyc says:

He’s all wrong for any type of concertmaster position based on his personality – but would be perfect for an associate or assistant position.

  • Jonathan says:

Does that mean he will stop teaching at Curtis and leave the quartet?

    • Floorigor says:

He would have to win the job in Cleveland first. The other candidates are the young concertmaster of Czech Philharmonic and David Chan from the Metropolitan Opera.
