Rene Kollo is prepared for assisted dying
NewsThe celebrated Heldentenor and German TV presenter turned 87 last week. He told an interviewer that he will not face the end of life as a nursing case.
‘I have a very good and nice doctor who will give me something, and then I would say goodbye and go.’

Greatest Stolzing EVER!
He shall not suffer.
Hoping he is not suffering. He has established a secure legacy and may it bring him comfort.
He reports being alive and well, with no end in sight. It’s all in the linked article.
So he wants the doctor to take responsibility for killing him?
Witnessing how Bayreuth has been run down must have caused him suffering.
Nice to read that the Rene Kollo is doing well. The linked article explicitly states that for Kollo there is no end in sight. The great singer discussed assisted dying as an eventuality.
“Obwohl für den ehemaligen „Ich lad mir gerne Gäste ein“-Moderator noch lange kein Ende in Sicht scheint, macht er sich bereits Gedanken um sein Ableben. Dabei kommt eine Sache für René Kollo nicht infrage: Ein Pflegefall zu werden. „Da würde ich freiwillig von dieser Erde gehen“, stellt er im Interview mit Meine Freizeit klar.”
He gave us the greatest Doctor Marianus on a Mahler 8 recording of all time.
Lucky him. I wish the US could change its opinion on dying with dignity.
Couldn’t agree more. We have a friend in ICU right now after a marathon 9 hour surgery for upper front jaw cancer. Tracheostomy, extended rehabilitation, new teeth…the full horror. He’s 78.
If we could all just take control of our final illnesses how much suffering could be avoided?
Some states already have. Check this NY Times obituary.

Shades of Yuri Egorov…
I live in backward land (USA) so I can’t do that
Am enviable career and a goodly age. He can be well-pleased.
I’ve been lucky enough to see him as Lohengrin and Max and Siegfried at ROH as the saying go’s they don’t make them like that these days I hope all go’s well for him and that as and if the time arises he’s not in pain and dos what’s best for him Best wishes
Quite by chance I heard/saw him last night in Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde. It was 1972, he was 35 years, Leonard Bernstein conducted the Israel Philharmonic in Tel Aviv en Christa Ludwig was the alto. Deeply moving, also the way Kollo was IN the music while the last part was played and sung.
