Music director quits before he starts
OrchestrasFrom the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, in Ohio:
Sergey Bogza, Music Director of the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra (YSO) since July 1, 2024, has resigned as of November 7, 2024, due to “personal, health, and family reasons”. Matt Pagac, CEO of the Youngstown Symphony Society, stated that “though Sergey’s circumstances prevent him from serving as the YSO Music Director, we are grateful to have met and engaged with him for a short time. We wish him well.”
Guest conductors have been secured …
Bogza was born in Russia and emigrated to the United States in 1995. He is in his third year as music director of the Panama City Symphony. He was selected by Youngstown in July but his debut kept getting postponed.
Not moving from PCB to Youngstown? How surprising…
There was no expectation that he move to OH. YSO is not a full-time gig.
His reasons included health. Given he accepted the position, I think one ought to believe him.
There is more to it. Their process was not being run by people with the expertise to do so.
