London trombone gets into Karajan Academy
Orchestraspress release:
Royal College of Music student, Robyn Anderson has won a place on the Berlin Philharmonic’s highly competitive Karajan Academy programme… This exceptional opportunity places Robyn among a select few musicians accepted each year, gaining experience in rehearsals and concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic as well as individual lesson and lectures with members of the orchestra that will serve as an exceptional foundation for her professional career.
Playing in the academy is route one to joining the Berlin Phil. Robyn previously graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Scotland,
Bone player news is always welcome. Congratulations to Robyn and best of luck in her career.
Robyn is the second British woman to win a trombone position in the Academy. Isobel Daws recently graduated from the Academy and is now principal in the Luxemburg Philharmonic.
So when will a German woman trombonist win a position in the Academy?
When my wife won the principal position in the Munich Philharmonic in 1980, the Berlin Phil still categorically forbade membership to women (and the Vienna and Czech Philharmonics as well.) As might be expected, she faced a lot of discrimination in the Munich Phil.
In other news, word is out today that Gracie Potter has won the audition for principal in the Detroit Symphony. Times slowly change.
