La Scala orchestra strikes on Puccini 100th
NewsThe musicians picked their moment to blank the centernary of Puccini’s death.
What should have been a recital with orchestra by Jonas Kaufmann and Anna Netrebko was called off at five minutes past eight on Friday night.
‘If you allow me a few minutes,’ said sovrintendente Dominique Meyer, ‘La Scala will offer you a glass of Bellavista and will arrange another concert.’
At twenty to nine the concert was reinstated with piano accompaniment, played by house repetiteur James Vaughan.
The orchestra strike was called as part of a national protest by trade unions.
Ah so, that’s what happened to the live stream on Arte when it suddenly went black!
Thank you for the info.
They still could’ve streamed the piano accompanied recital!
(Hmmm, they would have never dared to strike under Muti under these circumstances.)
they did and accompanied a Traviata on the piano
Friendly edit: “Centenary” is the spelling you’re looking for, not “centernary.”
I’m with the musicians! Orchestra players in La Scala start at around €57k annually. It’s certainly not enough to live well in an expensive city like Milan, and they should be paid more to play in Italy’s most premiere orchestra. With the starting salary of the Berlin Philharmonic being nearly double, it’s time for the musicians of La Scala to get more of what they deserve.
Interesting. How about if the musicians aren’t paid more and are allowed to resign and find other employment?
I wonder if there are many young unemployed eager musicians out there who would leap at the chance to play in La Scala?
What a wonderful attitude to have. Let’s screw the musicians of one of the finest Opera Orchestras in the World to save a few bucks and paint it as an opportunity to give work to young musicians. Let’s pretend that their years of work and experience and the fact they have passed the rigorous audition and trial process mean nothing. If your respect for artists and their abilities is so low, I have no idea why you’re on this page. Imagine, world class musicians wanting to be able to afford to live in the city they work in? You should apply to be the new GM, a whole generation of inexperienced musicians and employees can look forward to living in a bed sit 2 hours away from where they work. World class opinions there “Bone”
Someone earing 57,000 euros can afford to live pretty well in Milan, even if they don’t live in a palace with servants. And this salary is higher than most of the audience paying for the tickets to hear them play.
