Joyce DiDonato survives the US election
OperaMessage from the Kansas diva:
Last night: I kept vigil through the whole night and early morning. Then my eyes closed – numb – of their own volition. I woke a few minutes/lifetimes later bathed in tears from what felt like centuries ago.
This morning: shattered and wrung out from my deep core, I went about my daily duties as if projected unwillingly onto an old movie screen: out of body/out of heart.
This noon: reaching … reaching to connect. Reaching out to loved ones to tether to this precious, terrifying, seismic moment.
This 3:00: defiance arrived through the dense fog of bewilderment to the soundtrack of wrung out church bells.
This evening: clarity danced belligerently as I reclaimed my sacred and unassailable contract with my Self: NO ONE WILL STEAL MY JOY, ROB ME OF MY PURPOSE, STEER ME OFF COURSE. I/We will always be bigger than any single moment
This moment: a clarion call echoes and shivers throughout my soul to zoom out … further … further … and yet still further … and marvel at the inevitable atomic, blink-of-an-eye tsunami that will conjure storms and waves and troubles … and maybe … ah, YES! maybe …. Zoom out further …. Yes maybe it will bring healing.
This…
“Morgen” with the incomparable Brentano Quartet live from @wigmore_hall
Beautiful words, but…
…wasn’t “Morgen” a Nazi favorite?
Yes as was the Eroica, Wagner operas, Bruckner, and Léhar. So, whatever these composers did or said themselves, they were all nazis with hindsight.
Why should that matter?
Are we supposed to like only music that nice people like?
She doth protest too much (and I am no DT supporter)
Americans ought to save their energy for now…we ain’t seen nothin’ yet. I don’t intend that as a joke.
One cannot protest enough.
Her text would make a lovely Scena by Jake Heggie.
She has every right to feel that way, as does anyone whose preferred candidate loses an election. Half the country is devastated while the other half is thrilled, and that would still have been the case if the results were reversed.
Over half the country is not devastated.
Would the British present please keep that thought when thinking about those who voted differently on Brexit?
And would the Republicans note that he has had congratulations and a concession by those whom he defeated, plus offers of assistance in transition — more than he ever offered them. Only days ago he was saying that despite 2020’s results he should never have left the White House. And his opponent in this race will have to stand up and ratify his win in January. Which, unless I am very much surprised, she will do with dignity — a word, like grace, manners, humility, common sense well outside his limited lexicon.
Not very impressed by Joyce diDonato’s airy-fairy ramblings, but I suppose she means well — it’s the same message, in different verbiage, of the defeated candidate, essentially that this is what we have to deal with, but let’s not give up on working for our future.
Actually, it’s way more than half that are thrilled lol
Have you seen the popular vote totals lately?
True, but had the results been reversed, it would again be with violence. We’ve been there.
You can’t erase history, not matter how much they try.
Thank you Joyce.
I would like to share a comment that I wrote under a YouTube video, the day after the election results… but using different words.
“Send the Statue of Liberty back to France– she serves no purpose anymore”
The 6.6k “likes” and 185 favorable comments, may have struck a chord with the subscribers.
We will soon all* have to deal with the harsh reality that awaits us after Jan. 20th.
*the entire planet.
Send it to Melenchon? – a greater and much more ignore threat than the despicable Le Pen. Really?
Can’t wait! It’s gonna be EPIC!
Yes, it’s terrifying: a possible restoration of free speech, maybe even elimination of cancel culture, loss of elitist control; affordable mortgages and lower inflation, a strengthened middle class! No more Soviet-style lawfare!! Horrific.
Don’t get your hopes too high. Instead of reading the victory as a repudiation of an incompetent administration, Trump’s ego will make him go full speed to the other extreme. There will be some improvements in border security, perhaps the energy costs will no longer skyrocket (whether they will go down, this is another question), and he’ll finish with those antidemocratic supreme court “reforms” that the dumbocrats proposed. Also, the filibuster will be kept.
But I won’t get my hopes too high about the return to lower prices, especially if he puts the 20% tariffs that he promises. And the swamp will still be there – just different alligators will be in there.
Then in 2028 another woke dumbocrat massively supported by the mainstream press will come and there we go again…
And no globalization of intifada?! The horror!
Preposterous ignorant nonsense. You know nothing about Soviet reality if you make such a comparison.
Please keep your liberal tears flowing. And get used to democracy in action.
Do you mean armed rebellion and votre supression by ‘democracy in action’?
Oh the vapors!
Truly, she needs to get a grip.
She does rather make Taylor Swift look like an intellectual.
In January, if Trump survives all these crazy people and gets sworn in, I’ll celebrate at McDonald’s.
The crazy people who will not storm the Capitol and try to overturn a legally ratified decision? Who will try to ease the transition from one government to another as all but one President-elect has done since Washington?
Enjoy your McMeal as we prepare for a McPresidency.
We will get to the bottom of how the 2020 victory was stolen from Trump, I promise you. Powerful people will be punished. Where did all those Biden voters go?
They got angry about inflation.
It’s that simple.
What happened on January 6 2020 was disgusting and one of my reasons for not voting for Trump.
But if you recall in 2016 there were massive “fiery but mostly peaceful” protests from the “trump is not my president” crowd. Violence can not be compared to what happened on January 6, but was not negligible either, and the press minimized it. Plus don’t forget the two assassination attempts, as well as the Trump-Hitler rhetoric.
So I would not discard so easily the possibility of violence again.
sounds about right
Might even meet Kamala working there!
Openly racist jibe; giustizia is the last thing on your dim mind.
“Please contact my agent for further comments and potential engagements.”
The self-righteousness and lack of self-awareness is nauseating. She is living in a bubble, sniffing her own emissions and calling them Chanel #5.
I regret I had breakfast before reading this. Oh the pain…
I did not vote for Trump but this is beyond pathetic. Another mentally deranged liberal, what else is new. Get a friggin life.
For a satirical treatment of her symptoms, I recommend Ellia Kazan’s film A Face in the Crowd. It’s about a hillbilly played by Andy Griffith who all the suddenly becomes famous and thinks life revolves around him – not unlike what Griffith himself turned out later. And what this Kansas diva, who was marvelous at the beginning of her career, turned out too.
In the UK we do not use the word “liberal” to identify a class of people to sneer at.
The US is the only place I know that uses it as a dirty word.
Do you call half of the country deplorable, fascist, nazi garbage? If you do, no wonder people might vote against you.
“They” called…
Should have said leftists – and you are correct about that. One of the most maligned and wrongly used words today. As you can see, even I misuse it.
Poor woman having to live in a country with 72 million idiots, crikey.
How’s was your starmering today?
Send her your address so she can move in with a supportive idiot.
Except she doesn’t live in the United States. She lives in Spain.
Oh my God. What an over dramatic baby. I mean sure a few less babies murdered and should they survive that their genitalia remain intact. But surely she can wait until the next Democrat is elected for the carnage to continue. Take a break lady.
i’m going to enjoy the day when you reap what you sow
Pretentious twaddle. Spare us these pensées de Walmart and just sing
Too bad her voice would not work for Tosha but she could still go to Rome and jump off the Castillo San Angelo!
An operatic response from a mezzo-soprano. At least she didn’t die at the end.
It’s not about the Fall of America, it’s about HER.
It’s about ALL Americans. And it’s coming to a government near you. Be grateful you probably won’t be around to experience the fallout.
That’s a lot of blame to put on the Harris campaign. Alas, the Democrat Party probably convinced her, a rather reclusive VP—one of the least popular in recent times—that she had a chance (and could seize former Vice President Biden’s treasure chest for her campaign).
The current majority of voting Americans care about the economy, the border, and voter ID laws. (The current border czar brought us millions of criminals).
The country will be fine. The New York Philharmonic will have a 200k base salary, the LA Philharmonic will get a new MD, and Chicago will be Chicago.
I can’t believe DJT won. But I can believe Vice President didn’t.
Puccini could have written an opera: “L’Amore e la Politica” or
“Madama Insalta di parole”
The DEI hire was INSTALLED as the candidate – and no one is shocked that she was rejected outright by a majority of Americans.
Maurizio in Adriana Levouvreur says it best (Act 1): “maledetta politica.”
The “millions of criminals” line is a Big Lie that only fools like you believe.
She clearly has great regard for her profound thoughts and intensive self-reflection.
She fills us with ennui. No one cares.
A bit overwrought I would say.
She seems to have managed quite nicely during his first term. Does she have some keen, new insight that has eluded millions of others?
Oh, brother. To many ears, this is a wee bit over the top. The election showed that endorsements by celebrities and media outlets had very little effect upon the outcome of the election. In fact, many people rebelled against this kind of “manipulation” and voted against it. Everyone needs to “get over themselves” and realize that this was a HUGE wave of sentiment by over half of those who voted and respect that perhaps one needs to stop and evaluate much before speaking.
Looks like she’s suffering from dramatic neurosis.
Trump carried Kansas by 17 points, so it’s a good thing Joyce has relocated to Barcelona. Just imagine her trauma had she been surrounded by neighbors in red MAGA hats. PTSD is real. So is TDS.
Get a grip Ms. Didinato. I love your singing, but stick to singing and most of us don’t care about your liberal/progressive pity party. Get a life.
I think either Duse or Bernhardt played that cri de coeur, that little monologue in one of Sardou’s forgotten plays of purple passion. Perhaps Belasco. Set to music by Leoni or Tobani; couldn’t be anyone better.
How could someone write so much without saying anything remotely meaningful or coherent?
Kamala does that very well.
it’s amazing to read someone who thinks so highly of themself and tries so too hard to show their (questionable) intellect. get over yourself, Joyce, and lighten up on the absurd language. maybe time for a new PR person: that should never have been published. maybe stick to singing and leave the writing to those who are trained.
Yes — people who understand why there can’t be such a word as “themself.”
Some of us are less intolerant of the use of “them” and “their” as a singular. I am sure that, in my 37 years as an academic in the UK, I sometimes put up notices on the lines of, “Any student opting to write a dissertation should see their tutor by November 8.” I got no criticism from the Make Grammar Great Again warriors. My impression is that people in the UK are much more receptive to this use of “they” and “them” than those in the US.
Her madness has been evident for quite some time – not only in her political statements, which are of little relevance here, but in her singing as well.
Someone has suggested that all the hysterical reactions of the left-luvvies to the Trump victory should be made into a video. Great entertainment!
What’s luvvie about choosing not to vote for a convicted felon? Who thinks Haitians eat cats and dogs? Who basically does not accept reality?
There are several such compilations on you tube. I think they could make the basis for a terrific song cycle in the manner of Peter Maxwell Davies’ Eight Songs for a Mad King. His idiom is perfect for it.
Enjoy her singing. That’s her talent.
I’d like to thank each of you for being a teacher to me with each of these comments.
So childish and wrong. Accept the democratic process, stop whining, we dodged a bullet from the worst most incompetent candidate ever.
oh I was so worried for her, glad she survived this unfortunate event…Maybe she will make an album about it
