Get Carter: Stuttgart names Aussie chief
OperaThe Australian Nicholas Carter, who is presently chief conductor at Oper Bern in Switzerland, has been named Generalmusikdirektor of Staatsoper Stuttgart, one of the leading German houses. He will succeed Cornelius Meister in 2026.
Stuttgart says it chose Carter for his Wagner experience as well as his contemporary affinities. He gave the US premiere of Brett Dean’s Hamlet at the Met, having cut his professional teeth as Simone Young’s assistant conductor in Hamburg.
2026 surely, not 2006?
It is a shrewd appointment and he will bring much to the Stuttgart Opera House.
They said that about Meister too.
Yeah. What happened there, exactly?
But not the Opera House.
He will be GMD-exile in the Wagenhallen (former railway workshops) if all goes to plan …
Looks even worse than the StaatenHaus in Cologne where they have had to perform for many years while their opera house is (not) being renovated.
in raddition to his splendid Hamlet at the met, mo. carter conducted an absolutely magnificent Peter Grimes at the new york opera house with the great tenor Clayton in the title role; his conducting galvanized the soloists, chorus and orchestra for a performance which surpassed even the performances led by Colin davis, Atherton, David Robertson and conlon; I hope that he is able to re-establish the kind of orchestral and vocal values that Stuttgart achieved under leitner and varviso and, perhaps, can find the time to return to the met
An outstanding choice. Nick is an outstanding artist and a fine human being.
