Politics came first.

methinks Puccini will do just fine, lol, maybe one or two less productions of Butterfly or Boheme in the world might actually be healthy for the opera scene!

  • zandonai says:

why can’t we have a Meyerbeer festival or a Vivaldi Opera Festival instead of Puccini?

  • AD says:

As per La Scala’ recital…it was a general strike.

What’s the point of a ‘general strike if people (including both La Scala and the Maggio Fiorentino employers- not just the otchestra) don’t participate in it?

It’s not just ‘politics’. There is much more at stake in Italy, at the moment.

  • Lachera says:

Italy is the only country in EU where average wages are lower in purchase power than they were in 1993. Under these conditions, people has the right to strike. Were the strike called for another day, somebody would have find a different reason to complain….

  • Roger Rocco says:

No, the orchestra did not dishonor the greatness of Puccini!!! Puccini will live on at La Scala for as long as opera lives! The great orchestra is fighting to keep performing Puccini’s glorious music, nothing else!

  • Wolfgang von Maack says:

politics? how much money do you have? they want decent wages. don’t attack people for striking

  • Joep van Kirchroa says:

Extremely stupid comment by Mr. Lebrecht, people do have the right to strike in western Europe. This has nothing to do with Puccini nor any other composer, but with their struggle for decent payment.
