The Norwegian string player Eivind Ringstad joined the London Symphony Orchestra earlier this year as principal viola.

As of this week, he is also professor of viola at the Royal College of Music.

The RCM’s new director James Williams was previously CEO of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He keeps a keen eye on movement in the ranks.

Ringstad is 30. Plenty of teaching in him yet.

    Learning on the job:
Conservatoires used to hire pedagogues. Now, with a saturated market of young performers, they can hire an attractive position to one of those young hotshots “in need.”
Either Royal College could not get who it really wanted or it has no interest in getting an experienced teacher with a proven track record.
See: The recent violin and cello hires (numerous) at Curtis.

    Bravo to this young musician!
