Biz news: Askonas lose rising baton
OrchestrasThe American conductor James Gaffigan has dumped AskonasHolt as his main agency, transferring his general management to New York boutique Primo Artists.
Gaffigan, 45, is music director of Komische Oper Berlin and of Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia.
Primo, which had been handling his US careeer, now has his worldwide representation.
It’s an odd business where someone who has been conducting professionally for almost twenty years at some of the most prestigious institutions in the world could still be described as “rising”, but the music business IS odd in many ways.
Agreed. It is odd but not necessarily negative. Over time, some musicians with a slow and steady rise have far outpaced peers with a meteoric career. Günter Wand and Charles Mackerras are two examples I can easily think of: their fame reached its pinnacle towards the end of their long and productive careers.

Speaking of the Palau in Valencia: has it come through the flooding unscathed? I feel for the people of southeastern Spain: receiving over 20 months’ rainfall in 8 hours seems unimaginable (even as such mega-scale events are becoming more common: e.g., hurricane Helene in the southeastern US).
The Palau is in the centre of the CITY Valencia which was relatively unscathed (we walked by it daily). The devastation has been mostly in towns and villages in the PROVINCE of Valencia
