The Liceu in Barcelona has tweeted news of the death of soprano Enriqueta Tarrés, one of the frontline singers of her time. After making her debut at the Liceu aged 23, she joined the Basel Opera and later the Berlin State Opera, where she was appointed Kammersängerin.

Internationally, she sang major roles at the Met, Glyndebourne Covent Garden and Vienna.

In Spain, she premiered operas by Xavier Benguerel, Josep Soler and Luis de Pablo.

I had the immense pleasure to meet her and her student for many years. It was a joy to share her humble, intelligent personality. A wonderful woman and exceptional singer. RIP.

Enriqueta Tarres was featured in the first recording of De Falla’s cantata ATLANTIDA. She sings the role of Queen Isabella in that EMI set led by Fruhbeck de Burgos in the late 1970’s.
