Faculty at Manhattan School of Music are locked in a tough wage negotiation. The school is represented by one of NY’s costliest law firms, Proskauer Rose, whose attorneys charge $1,475 per hour.

MSM pays precollege faculty $61 per hour.

Here’s another striking stat: From each student’s tuition, the studio teacher receives about 20%. Ear training, theory and ensemble teachers receive just above 1%.

MSM College revenue in 2022 was $61.78 million. Expenses $56.69 million. net profit: $5.09 million.

Is this institution taxed as a profit-making centre? What are the profits for? I have attended several post-secondary institutions and I have never heard of any of them being in the business of making “profits.”

MSM’s compensation to teachers is well below that of competitors such as Juilliard or Mannes Prep. There is a petition online: https://www.change.org/p/manhattan-school-of-music-precollege-faculty-deserve-a-fair-contract-now

That’s a very low profit margin.

  • PB says:

MSM should pay its faculty industry standard wages! This is one of the top preparatory programs in the country, and it is scandalous that MSM is so dramatically underpaying the very people who are currently teaching the future stars of classical music!

  • Someone in the know says:

Not surprising. Joyce Griggs, Manhattan’s EVP and Provost, was Paul Hogle’s darling when she was at the Cleveland Institute. This is why the CIM faculty fought so hard against her and she’s now at MSM. This level of callousness towards the faculty is par for the course for these “leaders.”

  • Ensemble Teacher says:

The headline says “College Teacher” but this seems to be about Precollege, which is a separate division of the School with its own faculty union.

Which numbers in this post refer to which division?

  • Terence says:

    $61 ph in NYC?

I presume they use the prestige of MSM to charge more for their private students.

    • Bill says:

$61/hr is peanuts, especially for kids who can actually play! We aren’t talking group lessons for beginners here.
